The Center for Financial Stability (CFS) hosted remarks and a discussion with President Patrick T. Harker of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. President Harker focussed on the economic outlook, monetary policy, and financial stability.

Before taking office at the Philadelphia Fed, Harker was the 26th president of the University of Delaware. Before Delaware, Harker was dean and Reliance Professor of Management and Private Enterprise at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and previously the chair of its Operations and Information Management Department.

Author and scholar, Carl E. Walter will discuss his forthcoming book The Red Dream: the Chinese Communist Party and the financial deterioration of China. Red Dream analyses 1) the build-up of leverage throughout the system, 2) how regulators have worked to generate strong performance metrics while sloughing off unwanted assets, 3) the health of the financial system, as well as 4) the present within the context of prior financial stressors in the U.S., Japan and China itself.

Carl is a CFS favorite, having presented on the Chinese financial system and his award-winning book Red Capitalism.

Carl recently served as an independent director of a major Chinese bank. For many years, Carl worked in China, where he last served as JP Morgan’s China COO and CEO of its banking subsidiary. There he helped build a profitable domestic security and currency trading operation. He is now a visiting scholar at the Stanford Shorenstein Asia Pacific Research Center.

The Center for Financial Stability (CFS) hosted remarks and a discussion with Federal Reserve Board Governor Christopher J. Waller. Governor Waller focussed on the economic and monetary outlook.

Prior to his appointment at the Board, Chris served as executive vice president and director of research at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis since 2009. In addition to his experience in the Federal Reserve System, he served as a professor and the Gilbert F. Schaefer Chair of Economics at the University of Notre Dame.
