Links

Here is a short list of links we have found useful.

Economic information generally: Resources for Economists on the Internet.

Economic history: EH.net is operated by the Economic History Association. It has a data section.

Older statistics—databases: “Older” here means including coverage that starts before World War II. Global Financial Data is a commercial database with extensive long-term data. Its coverage overlaps ours in some respects, but it is strongly oriented towards the needs of investors and has up-to-date coverage of recent data, whereas we are more oriented toward students of financial history and do not strive for up-to-date coverage.

There are a number of “hubs” for particular kinds of data that may stretch back for centuries. They include the European State Finance Database, the Global Price and Income History Group, the Groningen Growth and Development Centre, and the Medieval and Early Modern Data Bank.

Older statistics—links: Historicalstatistics.org is a portal site. Macro Data 4 Stata has links to a number of widely used sites with macroeconomic data and coding into Stata.

Newer statistics—national: “Newer” here means since World War II. This list of national statistical agencies and list of central banks are good places to start. Some agencies have statistics extending back before World War II.

Newer statistics—international: The International Monetary Fund (especially its World Economic Outlook database), World Bank, and United Nations are the places to start. The International Monetary Fund produces widely used commercial databases on financial statistics, balance of payments, trade, and government finance, about which you can find information on the link above. Many university libraries subscribe to these or other commercial databases.

Other useful information: There are a number of converters on the Internet for calendars and weights and measures.
